Design System Architect
Job Summary
Our client is seeking a Design Systems Architect to join a highly specialized team responsible for building and evolving an enterprise React design system used across more than 100 internal web applications. This isn't a traditional front-end development role—you won't be building customer-facing features. Instead, you'll design and develop the reusable components, frameworks, and developer tools that enable engineering teams across the organization to build applications faster, more consistently, and with accessibility built in.
This team thrives on solving the problems that others consider impossible. They're looking for someone who naturally questions assumptions, thinks outside the box, and enjoys designing elegant, scalable solutions to complex engineering challenges. Success in this role isn't measured by years of React experience alone—it's demonstrated through the ability to architect innovative solutions, explain the reasoning behind technical decisions, and build systems that remain flexible and maintainable as requirements evolve.
You'll work closely with designers, accessibility experts, and engineering teams to understand real-world challenges, influence the direction of the design system, and create reusable building blocks that improve the developer experience across the organization.
Core Responsibilities
- Design, architect, and maintain a shared React component library used by more than 100 internal engineering teams
- Build reusable UI components, frameworks, and developer tooling using React and TypeScript
- Solve complex engineering problems through creative thinking and innovative architectural solutions
- Design scalable, maintainable systems that anticipate future requirements rather than only solving today's problems
- Partner with engineering teams to understand their challenges and identify opportunities to improve the developer experience
- Collaborate with designers and accessibility specialists to ensure components are consistent, intuitive, and accessible
- Influence component APIs, architecture, and design system standards through thoughtful technical recommendations
- Analyze existing implementations across multiple frameworks to identify opportunities for standardization and improvement
- Write clean, well-tested, and well-documented code that serves as the foundation for enterprise applications
- Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to the long-term vision of the company's front-end platform
- Continuously evaluate new technologies and approaches that improve maintainability, flexibility, and developer productivity
Required Skills/Experience (Must-Haves)
- Expert-level experience with React and TypeScript
- Experience designing or architecting design systems, component libraries, SDKs, frameworks, or developer platforms
- Proven ability to architect solutions from the ground up—not simply implement requirements
- Demonstrated experience solving complex technical problems through creative, out-of-the-box thinking
- Strong systems thinking with the ability to explain why a solution was chosen and the tradeoffs involved
- Experience building reusable tools and platforms consumed by other developers
- Strong front-end architecture and API design experience
- Experience developing scalable, extensible, and maintainable software solutions
- Understanding of accessibility best practices (WCAG, ARIA)
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a highly collaborative, self-directed engineering environment
Preferred Skills/Experience (Nice-to-Haves)
- React design systems or enterprise component libraries
- React internals (Fiber, reconciliation, hooks, rendering lifecycle, concurrent features)
- Design tokens and token-driven styling
- Angular or other front-end frameworks
- Open-source contributions, technical blogging, conference speaking, or other evidence of original engineering work
- Experience creating developer tools, internal platforms, or reusable frameworks

- Location: Greenwood Village, Colorado
- Onsite
